Systems Thinking is a critical discipline and of increasing importance as the apparent complexity of the world demands more attention to modeling processes. Acting based on oversimplified models has resulted in the current crises regarding the global economy and environmental stability, to name only two. I applaud anyone who attempts to emphasize the importance of this discipline to improving one's understanding of complex systems through successive approximations. That being said, an aspect to this book sensationalizes the author(s) version by describing having found the "DNA of systems thinking" (making them the Watson & Crick of systems thinking) when they refer to their abstruse "DSRP" terminology. Systems thinking treatise using more familiar and meaningful terms already flourishes in that literature (or in general physics for that matter). I found it both annoyingly commercial and unnecessarily complicated. Clearly, Cabrera had sought to duplicate or surpass the commercial success of Senge and those Fifth Discipline books by adopting some of the self-help books formula-for-commercial success. The aim seems not as much to clarify, but to suggest a perspective, so unique and incomparable to the vast existing literature, that you could only learn this approach from them. Yet, many works sold on Amazon are more straight forward and require no "special language". (CRLabs is a highly profitable enterprise which appears to do training in many locations, so congrats. The book selling formula works!)Any success in this method is seems almost accidental by a redirection in the educational approach towards cultivating a sense of personal meaning and not by their peculiar terminology or colorful graphing method. Education should connect the material with what is meaningful for the individual. When something is meaningful, their are natural incentives built in to optimize outcomes. It becomes a growth oriented process to revise and update one's models based on experience. Resetting the learning process, through their metaphor or any other viable means, is to engage the student by exploring how they think rather than just regurgitating a memorized 'answer'. In science and engineering...individual's are required to provide their proofs or process, which can be more important than the answer. This is how education leads to autonomous thinking responsible individuals and not disengaged, performing automatons.
The Cabrera's have developed a deep, yet practical approach to Systems Thinking. This is one of my all-time favorite books, one that I have marked up and refer to often. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for both an introduction to Systems Thinking and those looking for a deeper understanding of it as well.
